Books and Manuals for Tax Preparers and Tax Consultants
Below are some of the tax books I have in my library. A good tax library should have both technical references which are updated at least yearly as well as books that are more readable.
A tax return preparer should be widely read on a variety of business, tax and accounting topics, especially in his or her chosen niche(s). It takes a lot of reading to keep up with all the strategies and changes. It also takes a lot of reading just getting yourself up to speed. Get started!
Gary Carter, CPA explains in full detail how he developed his business on a shoestring budget in his spare time and how it developed into a full-time income. What sets this book apart from most is Carter's ability to explain in plain English the in's and out's of the tax business and how a practitioner can find success in a complex system. This is the most inspiring and useful books I've ever read on getting started in the tax business. Carter explains the difference between tax preparation and tax consulting and how you can get your foot in the door in either. Don't expect a detailed, step-by-step marketing plan for your specific niche, but do expect to get plenty of insight and ideas. Easily worth several times its cover price. Read all of my review of Getting Started in Tax Consulting.
People engaged in creative pursuits need to be familiar with the special tax rules that apply to them, and they need a professional tax consultant who can make sure they pay the least tax possible. That's why Peter Jason Riley, CPA has written the most excellent New Tax Guide for Writers, Artists, Performers & Other Creative PeopleMost of the book discusses tax reporting in the context of a sole proprietorship, but the author has a very helpful chapter on choosing and setting up a business entity (LLC or Corporation) and a chapter on preparing for and surviving an IRS audit. Read more about why I think the New Tax Guide belongs on your book shelf.
There comes that day in the life of every tax return preparer when a client calls saying they've just received a notice from the IRS and they need help. It's best if you're prepared for that day. I can't think of a better way to learn to deal with the IRS than by reading Daniel J. Pilla's IRS Problem Solver.
See why I consider this book a must for a tax preparer's reference and educational library.
