- Get some type of basic training in tax return preparation.
- Get some experience working with an experienced preparer so you can learn the "tricks of the trade."
- Get your PTIN and E-file registration taken care of with the IRS, and comply with any state licensing requirements if you're in CA, OR, MD or NY.
- Get some more education and training during the off-season.
- Buy some professional tax preparation software and a Windows-based computer (if you don't already have one. You'll want a laser printer and a scanner/copier as well and some basic office supplies.
- Consider working toward becoming an Enrolled Agent or a CPA if that path is open to you.
- Start building your own clientele.
- Continue adding education in areas that are useful to you or that you are interested in based on the clients you want to work with.
- Decide whether you want to work from home or find affordable office space.
- Build a network of resources like bookkeepers, other tax preparers who specialize in other areas that you can consult with, attorneys, Quickbooks specialists, computer repairpersons, etc.
